AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY
The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) is the smallest self-governing internal territory of Australia at only 88 kilometres (north to south) by 30 kilometres (east to west). Its population is less than 350 000 people and almost half of the land is made up of the Namagdi National Park. It is the capital territory of the entire Commonwealth of Australia and is surrounded by the state of New South Wales.
The capital city of the ACT is Canberra, the surrounds of which are magnificent in their greenery and natural abundance. The vast majority of the population of ACT dwells within the borders of this capital. The energetic amongst visitors will delight in the many trails around Canberra that cater for leisurely strolls or more intensive
Lake Burley Griffin, an artificial lake in the centre of Canberra hikes. Likewise, the many national parks will enthral young and old alike as they discover the fauna and flora of Australia. Braidwood, Gold Creek and Tharwa are just some of the towns around the capital that are popular amongst tourists and certainly worth a visit. The abundance of arable land has meant very successful sheep- and cattle farming opportunities, and this area has done well to use these to their financial advantage.
The ACT was established at the beginning of the 20th century after it was decided that a national capital was required, as opposed to states running their own territories independently. It is situated almost exactly between the other two runners-up, Sydney and Melbourne. This territory began its significant growth and development in the mid 1900’s, after World War II.
Its main industries are manufacturing, property, business services and finance.
Although it is small, the Australian Capital Territory has succeeded in establishing itself as a viable industrial and tourism hub. It is equipped with the facilities to handle the influx of visitors, but remains committed to environmental sustainability and protection, making it even more attractive as a destination amongst nature lovers.
