QUEENSLAND - Brisbane

Brisbane is the largest city in the state of Queensland and the third most densely populated in the entire continent of Australia. It is home to about 2 million residents. Despite its impressive size, “Brissie” (as it is affectionately known by the locals) was often disregarded somewhat when compared to the bustling metropolises of Sydney and Melbourne. This image was propagated by its relaxed, ‘country’ feel and lazy ambience. However, this casual mask is quickly falling as the city welcomes more and more people from all over the world to its borders, either for sightseeing or for a long-term relocation.

Brisbane is situated along the river of the same name, which is between Moreton Bay and the Great

Dividing Range. The river was named after its discoverer, Sir Thomas Brisbane, who governed that area from 1821 to 1825. Although the first British Settlement was officially in 1924, free settlers were only permitted into Brisbane from 1842. Until 1859, Brisbane was under the control of New South Wales, but became an independent colony thereafter.

The secret to Brisbane’s success is that, despite its enormous growth and development, it still exudes its casual, relaxed attitude, that small-town charm that has earned it acclaim all over the world. This ambience permeates the cosmopolitan lifestyle of the locals, and visitors will delight in the cultural, historical and natural abundance of Brisbane. Shops, boutiques, art galleries, exhibitions, markets, cafés, restaurants, bars, pubs, clubs and more converge in hospitable array, warmly inviting all to come and partake in the excitement and activity.

Brisbane is achieving increasing acknowledgement for its sophisticated architecture and magnificent countryside. Within the city itself are various parks, reserves, rivers and bays. These are home to an array of Australian fauna and flora, promising a most rewarding trip for international visitors.
