NORTHERN TERRITORY - Darwin
Darwin is situated on the Timor Sea in the Northern Territory of Australia. It is the capital city of this state and, although it has a population of only just over 120 000 people and despite its being the smallest of all other Australian capital cities, it remains the biggest city with the densest population in the entire state.
It began as an outpost for the earliest pioneers of this continent when it was first discovered in 1839. It was named after the explorer’s (John C Wickham) former shipmate, Charles Darwin years before he gained acclaim for his evolutionary theories. It had to be rebuilt twice as a result of World War II and Cyclone Tracy. Today, it is one of the most culturally diverse, progressive, interesting and fun cities to

Darwin is particularly close to the Asian coastline, making it a vital gateway to certain countries (like East Timor and Indonesia). Accessibility is further enhanced by the Stuart Highway, which stretches right from Darwin in the Northern Territory to Port Augusta in South Australia.
Darwin has achieved recognition in the global tourism world for its fascinating mixture of bustling city life and tranquil Australian Outback. It has equipped itself for the increasing number of annual visitors, providing an impressive range of accommodation, attractions and activities. This makes it the perfect base from which to experience the rest of the Northern Territory.
Its natural diversity lends itself to several parks and reserves, home to a range of Australia’s animals and plants. These make for great day trips for the entire family. Some of the more popular parks are Litchfield, Berry Springs, Holmes Jungle and East Point Reserve.
Above all else, Darwin is known for its relaxed atmosphere, friendly people and quirky Outback idiosyncrasies and characters. The cultural world of the indigenous Aboriginal people amalgamates well with the non-Aboriginal customs to create a speckled community of fascinating people and history.
