SOUTH AUSTRALIA Kangaroo Island

Kangaroo Island is the epitome of sheer, untainted beauty. It is the third largest island belonging to the country of Australia at 4405 square kilometres and with a population of approximately 4500 people. It is situated just over 100km south-west of Adelaide and 13km from Cape Jervis. The island is particularly lush, boasting dense foliage. In fact, over half of the island has never been cleared, leaving its vegetation to grow undisturbed in all its natural abundance.

25 percent of Kangaroo Island is dedicated to National Parks and Conservation areas. In addition, there are five official Wilderness Protection Area; namely, Flinders Chase National Park, Seal Bay Conservation Park, Cape Gantheaume Conservation Park, Cape Bouguer Wilderness Protection Area and Ravine des Casoars Wilderness Protection Area. These are home to a fascinating array of plant- and animal life, which enrich the natural value of this prime destination. It is also varied in terms of its

landscape, offering visitors dense forests, wetlands, impressive mountains and long stretches of beaches. This variety gives rise to unique mixtures of wildlife species.

Kangaroo Island is the natural home of the Rosenberg's Sand Goanna, Short-beaked Echidna, Tammar Wallaby, Southern Brown Bandicoot, Common Brushtail Possum, Kangaroo Island Kangaroo, Kangaroo Island Emu and New Zealand Fur Seal. It is also the famous for being the location of the world’s oldest bee sanctuary. Its honey production is noteworthy and goes as far back as the late 1800’s. Foxes and rabbits are not allowed to enter the island from mainland Australia and have remained completely absent. Several species were introduced to the island some time ago and continue to live there. These include the Koala, Common Ringtail Possum and Platypus.

There are several safe swimming beaches around Kangaroo Island; e.g. Emu Bay and Snelling Beach. It is advisable that visitors stick to these northern beaches as the southern ones can experience strong under-currents.
