NEW SOUTH WALES - Surfing in New South Wales

New South Wales, or NSW, boasts 1590km of open coastline and 757 ocean beaches, 40 of which are in its capital city, Sydney. One of these beaches, Cronulla, stretches for an impressive 10km! NSW, and Sydney in particular, have established a culture around these stunning beaches, creating a cool attitude and relaxed atmosphere along its coastline, luring locals and visitors to the shores to enjoy the warm Australian sunshine and the cool blue waters.

The beaches are particularly accessible as they are so plentiful, making them convenient for visitors staying in all areas of the state. They are also close to the city centres, meaning that shops, restaurants, bars, salons and galleries are close by. The surfing conditions of the various beaches range from those that are ideal for beginners to far more challenging ones for the more adventurous surfers.

Avid surfers will enjoy the beaches situated in the national parks as well as the famous beaches along the north and south coasts. Family beaches promise safe swimming and ideal conditions for the family to relax, play in the sand or walk along paths and across rock pools. The following beaches are popular favourites:

Manly Beach – Just 30 minutes from the city centre by ferry, Manly boasts surf spots, cafés and clothing stores.
Freshwater Beach – Although this is one of Sydney’s smaller beaches, it is where Australian surfing found its roots and remains popular amongst surfers today.
Bronte Beach – This is an ideal tourist beach as it is not only a stunning spot at which to swim and surf, but also offers restaurants and bars for visitors to relax.
Garie Beach – This is situated within the Royal National Park in the south of NSW’s capital city. It is one of the most popular amongst surfers for its sizeable waves and easy accessibility.
Killalea State Park beaches – This reserve consists of 2 beaches, The Farm and Mystics. These are some of the best surfing beaches on the entire south coast of Australia.
Angourie – This is the continent’s first dedicated surfing reserve, a hotspot since the mid-1900’s.

Those beaches more suited to the family are Bondi, Gerroa, Kiama, Narooma, Pebbly Beach, Seal Rocks and Terrigal.
