NEW SOUTH WALES
New South Wales (NSW) is situated in the south-eastern region of the continent and is Australia’s most populous state. Its capital city is the favourite tourist destination and commercial hub, Sydney. As it is such a significant part of the country, NSW is home to many tourist attractions, including over 50 game parks and reserves, natural wonders and stunning beaches. There are even several World Heritage sites in NSW; some of which are Lord Howe Island, the Gondwana Rainforests and the Greater Blue Mountains Area.
NSW was founded in 1788; 18 years after Captain James Cook discovered it during one of his voyages. It was Captain Arthur Phillip who assumed the role of governor and established NSW’s first settlement in 1788. However, chaos followed and, in 1809, a new governor (Lieutenant-colonel Lachlan Macquarie) was sent to re-establish a successful settlement. Today, the governor is Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir (Lady
Bondi Beach, Sydney, Australia Shehadie), appointed by the Queen of Australia, Queen Elizabeth II. Both the Australian Capital Territory and the Jervis Bay Territory are enclaves (territories within a larger border) of NSW.
New South Wales is particularly fun and exciting for its inclusion of both coastline and Outback, providing varied and beautiful scenery from one border to the next. Within one state, visitors and locals enjoy a plethora of things to see and do. This also implies a great variety of plant- and animal life. These range from whales in the blue ocean waters to kangaroos in the arid Outback. Mt Kosciuszko has 20 plant species unique only to New South Wales and is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
The main industries that sustain New South Wales are tourism, seafood, dairy, sugar cane, timber and beef. The coastal towns are those that focus particularly on tourism as a source of income and job creation. Tourists to New South Wales are urged to see the Snowy Mountains, the Royal National Park, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney and Powerhouse Museum.
