WESTERN AUSTRALIA - Perth
The capital city of Western Australia is also its largest. With a population of 1.65 million people, Perth continues to grow at a considerable rate. Perth was the original political centre of this Australian region right from its founding in 1829. Perth’s port is called Fremantle and has become such an established and sizeable part of this area that it is considered a city.
Perth is particularly beautiful as it is flanked by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean and the low escarpment of the Darling Mountain Range. The Swan River runs through the city, the banks of which are the sites of many homes. These gorgeous surrounds have earned Perth the ranking of fifth place on the World’s Most Liveable Cities list of The Economist 2009.
A view of the city of Perth - Western Australia
For those visitors and locals that appreciate the artistic and cultural side of city living, Perth is the Western Australian Mecca for world-class entertainment, shows and cultural displays. Perth places a high priority on these aspects and offers many of them for free within the metropolitan area to ensure that locals and visitors do not miss out on such valuable offerings. Festivals, markets and shows make for an exciting experience and promise lasting memories. Of course, the rich cultural history of Australia is a major lure for foreigners and this permeates many of Perth’s exhibitions and performances.
Its colonial history is also interesting and somewhat colourful, interwoven with the lives and movements of the ancient Aborigine tribes. Several tours allow visitors to witness Australia’s history from a new perspective, and these include the Convicts and Colonials Trail, Boom or Bust Trail (exposing the struggles and victories of the gold rush) and the Icons of Influence Trail (providing information on the forerunners of the Australian continent).
Other popular tourist attractions include Barrack Square, The Swan Bells, Perth Zoo, Perth Mint (a gold refinery) and the beautiful Swan River. In addition, there are many stunning parks and gardens in which the glorious flora of Australia resides in colourful array.
Perth, like much of Australia, presents visitors with a plethora of sights, sounds, tastes and aromas within the confines of one major metropolis. This combination of beauty, intrigue and world-class amenities set this destination apart amongst its global peers.
