QUEENSLAND
Queensland exceeds the performance of many other Australian states in several ways. Not only is it excelling in terms of financial wealth, it is also the fastest growing state in the country. Another unique selling point is that Queensland presents the entire spectrum of sights, sounds and flavours within its borders, making it as diverse as the population that calls it home. Bustling city centres are surrounded by natural serenity and abundance.
Queensland is 1.7 million square kilometres, and is situated in the north-east of the continent. It is the 2nd largest state in the country. Most of the residents inhabit the south-eastern corner of the state, which comprises (in part) the Gold Coast and Brisbane. Nicknamed The Sunshine State, Queensland benefits from lovely tropical weather conditions for most of the year.
As with most of Australia, this area was once inhabited by the indigenous Aborigine tribes, tens of thousands of Aerial view of Surfers Paradise, the holiday capital of the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia years ago. They left remnants of their lives in the form of fossils, rock paintings and implements. In 1859, Queensland was made a separate British Crown Colony. Like Victoria, this state was named after the monarch Queen Victoria, the much-loved Queen of England.
The capital of Queensland is Brisbane. The entire area occupied by cities exceeds 40 000 square kilometres, making Queensland a significant commercial and industrial hub. However, its natural beauty has much to do with its popularity. The Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast are home to some of the most spectacular beaches, luring visitors from all over the world to relax on the inviting sands, or be refreshed by turquoise waters. The Bunya Mountains and the Great Dividing Range are spectacular in their magnitude and scenery, while the Great Barrier Reef and the Central Eastern Rainforest Reserves (UNESCO World Heritage sites) guarantee awe-inspiring sights.
Although there are several climatic zones throughout the expansive state of Queensland, all are characterised by hot summers. Rainfall occurs during winter, but is not always very heavy.
Queensland has much to offer even the most discerning of travellers, and visitors are encouraged to explore the natural and commercial abundance that characterises this state.
