QUEENSLAND - Southern Reef Islands

The Southern Reef Islands are just off the coast of Queensland, situated between Bundaberg and Rockhampton. They are made up of several coral reefs that make up the southern part of the Great Barrier Reef, one of the world’s most outstanding natural wonders. They can be reached by Bundaberg, Gladstone and Rosslyn.

Some of the Southern Reef Islands are National Parks, offering visitors the unique opportunity to stay on and explore their natural abundance and their impressive array of plants, animals and people. These islands include Lady Musgrave (a coral cay equipped only with bush toilets, no water), Masthead, North West (the largest coral cay on the Great Barrier Reef) and Tryon (one of the famous residing spots of the Green Turtle). The camping facilities are situated within the Australian bush and offer very few modern amenities, providing the authentic camping experience. A coral cay refers to an island that is perched on top of a coral reef.

Heron Island is one of the major hotpots for tourists visiting the Great Barrier Reef off Queensland.

Exquisite coral surrounds the island and provides hours of fascinating sights and enthralling colours for keen divers. This island is mostly occupied by a National Park, while a smaller portion is dedicated to the gorgeous Heron Island Resort. Wilson Island is within close proximity to Heron and is another excellent diving destination. After a busy day spent exploring or a lazy one spent soaking up the sun on the stunning beaches, return to Heron Island for a refreshing drink and comfortable lodgings.

The Lady Elliot Island Resort is on the island of the same name and is a fantastic getaway for travellers that have come to this stunning paradise to explore its underwater wonders. Incredible coral, blowholes and shipwrecks promise exciting sights for all members of the family.

The natural abundance of Australia in general and Queensland in particular is especially prolific in the ocean’s impressive coral reefs. These promise a lifetime of memories to all who explore these treasures.
