NEW SOUTH WALES - Sydney

Sydney is the largest city on the entire Australian continent and the capital of the state of New South Wales. It is characterised by its diversity set within a cosmopolitan aura of sights, sounds and core business activities. Much of this diversity has been brought about by the influx of immigrants from all over the world. Almost 4.5 million people have made their home in Sydney’s 12 000 square kilometres.

slopes of the hill and is built around the impressive Sydney Harbour. It enjoys the beauty and convenience of many rivers and bays, making it a particularly lush and desirable destination.

Being so water-rich means that Sydney is home to an abundance of plant- and animal life, many of which reside in the plentiful number of national parks and reserves in and around the city. These include Hyde Park and the Royal Botanical Gardens.

Culturally, Sydney is almost as diverse as its natural profusion. It has been a desirable destination to visit and live for many decades. This has led to an increasingly varied population in terms of colour, language, culture, religion and race. It has been voted one of the world’s top 10 places to live and this has no doubt played a major role in the establishment of such a unique community of people. One of the most popular cultural attractions is Chinatown, which reflects the neighbouring Asian cultures in an extensive, authentic neighbourhood.

Sydney has featured on the global scale for various reasons over the years. It has hosted international events (e.g. 2000 Summer Olympics and the final of the 2003 Rugby World Cup), and makes its dominance known amongst the world’s most significant economic and commercial entities.
