TASMANIA
The Tasmanian state of Australia is unique in that it actually comprises the main island of Tasmania as well as several surrounding islands, unlike the other states that are all part of the mainland. Tasmania is one of the world’s biggest islands, and its 62 409 square kilometres are home to a fascinating spectrum of people, animals and plants. Its capital city is Hobart.
The evidence of Tasmanian Aborigine tribes indicates that these ones occupied the area some 35 millennia ago. However, it was the Dutch explorer, Abel Tasman, that first reported having spotted the Wineglass Bay, Tasmania island in 1642. Over 100 years later, in the 1770’s, explorers landed here and began to explore and colonise its fertile landscape and awesome beauty.
It is still these aesthetics that draw residents and visitors from all corners of the globe. The island is surrounded by both the Indian and Atlantic oceans and is mountainous due to ancient active volcanoes. These have, however, become inactive over the centuries, and the mountains formed in ancient times are now smooth and round, giving the landscape a distinct beauty. These mountains tower over dense forests and rainforests, The Tarkine being one of the largest temperate rainforests (3800 square kilometres) in the world. It is also a very ‘wet’ island, with many rivers and estuaries leading from the Central Highlands to the coast.
Not only will nature enthusiasts enjoy the stunning vistas, but also the range of plants and animals that inhabit this diverse landscape. Huon Pines are aged at over 2000 years, while Eucalyptus Trees tower over 90 metres above impressed spectators. The Tasmanian Devil is an iconic marsupial and is usually a scavenger. It is a carnivore and is known for its vicious temperament.
Tasmania’s main industries are mining, agriculture, forestry and tourism. It exports a large proportion of foodstuffs, particularly seafood. The tourism industry is booming, boosted by good economic conditions and cheap air fares. It is further enhanced by the increasing awareness of its natural and cultural wealth amongst travellers all over the world.
As one of Australia’s most gorgeous and varied destinations, Tasmania certainly presents visitors and locals with an oasis of natural wonders and a serene sense of departure from the hustle and bustle of city living.
